Richwood

Richwood enjoys close access to beautiful trails and breathtaking mountain views and is home to the Monongahela National Forest Gauley Ranger District Headquarters. The small town is situated near the southern end of the forest and serves as a gateway to spectacular whitewater rivers as well. In fact, there are 150 miles of rivers and streams within a 25-mile radius of Richwood. These waterways are stocked throughout the year with coveted Golden Trout as well as Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout. Native Brook Trout are abundant in the area’s rivers and streams as well. The 16-mile Cranberry Tri-River Rail Trail runs through Richwood and is a great hiking or mountain biking option. The Tri-River name comes from the three nearby rivers – Cranberry, Cherry and Gauley. The Cranberry River, north of Richwood, and the Cherry River, which runs through the town, both flow into the Gauley River west of town. Restaurants and lodging are available in town. An outfitter’s shop in town offers supplies, directions, and insider tips. Every spring, the town celebrates ramps, a wild onion that grows in the Appalachian Mountains. The “Feast of the Ramson” offers a taste of not only ramps, but of a community that’s tied to its natural environment in many ways.
